I always tell myself, don’t ever think it can’t happen to you. As I write this, I pray it is a blessing for anyone who can relate or knows someone else who can.

On November 19th, 2019 I went to my primary doctor for an ear infection. When I got there she realized it was time for me to do my routine blood-work. Of course I wanted to make sure that my levels are normal so I went ahead. I did the blood-work. I left the doctor office and made my way to work to carry on with my day. The next day 11/20/2019 at around 4:30 pm I received a call from my doctor saying she received my results from my lab work and something doesn’t seem right so she ran it again to double check. She proceeds to say that I need to copy some number down (my white blood cell levels) and go directly to a particular hospital before the end of the night. Obviously as any human being receiving a message like this you begin to panic. As instructed, I completed my day at work and went to directly to the hospital. Unfortunately, after spending the entire night there. They couldn’t detect anything in particular.

I was then referred to an Oncologist/Hematologist. On 11/23/2019 I was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (a type of blood cancer that starts in white blood cells in your bone marrow). At that time, I wasn’t completely processing everything in full but I understand what I was being told. Even though I knew the diagnoses could fully be correct, I still wanted another opinion. Rightfully so, I went ahead and got another opinion. He explained to me thoroughly what the cancer was in full details. To everyone’s surprise, I did not cry nor did I show any sudden emotion. If you’re close to me, you know this is quite normal. We then went over the process of chemotherapy and how soon he would want me to begin treatments. I left the office and turned to my mother and said “Don’t even worry, don’t start to fret I’ll come out of this victorious, just wait for the testimony”, and we went on with our evening.

December 5th, 2019 I packed a bag and admitted myself into the hospital, mentally preparing to stay there for an entire month to begin Round 1 of chemotherapy. During that entire month I went through every emotion. But with the help and strength of God I held on. To everyone who came to visit and kept me in their prayers. Thank you! To my brother and sister who visited everyday, no matter the weather. Thank you! To my mother who laid on a pullout chair for weeks next to me and went through sacrifices no one could ever begin to imagine. Thank you!!! I was finally discharged on January 3rd, 2020, this was by far one of the most grateful and happiest day of my life.

Today, May 28th, 2020 I am on my 3rd round of chemotherapy and will be starting my 4th and final in just a few weeks. But let me tell you all, it has not been an easy 6 months. I have been hospitalized a few times in between. But is that stopping me? Absolutely not! I serve an amazing God who has given me the strength to push through each day even when my bones hurt, when I can barely walk, when I’m constantly throwing up and just generally feeling weak. I have lost all my hair and almost 40 lbs. Many people ask me how am I so positive through all of this. And it’s simply the Grace of God. I went in that hospital in such high spirits that my nurses thought I was on the wrong floor. I kept that spirit right through even when I got weary of laying in that hospital bed for weeks on weeks. Through the rocky outpatient treatments that I’m currently on, I still keep that spirit going, even when it gets tough. Because believe it or not, it makes a difference in how your body reacts to the treatments. You have have to stay positive. I tell myself everyday victory is at the end of this.

I want anyone who is struggling with a health condition or anything that is beyond their control to PRAY to God for strength. He gives His toughest battles to His strongest soldiers. HOLD ON! You will get through this. Your testimony will be amazing!

p.s – I’m a very private person, unless you’re close to me, then you know I don’t share much about what is going on in my life. But I decided to open up about this because I believe it can definitely be a gift to someone else and help them to get through a rough patch and uplift them to carry on. Be encouraged! Stay positive! Never stop praying!

    You have deeply moved me with your account of resilient spirit and brave perseverance. I feel inspired. I’m happy to know you and call you a friend. I have not stopped picturing the not-so-distant future days to come where we can look back on this chapter of your life and reflect on how you made it through stronger than before.     My best friend was dx’d with APL years ago and it took them a while to get through it but they pulled through and kicked that APL in the butt.

    I know how hard it can be on someone watching a loved on go through it. I wish your family strength in this as well.

  45. In every way, shape, and form, you have no idea how proud I am of you Kayon. This is not an easy process to go through much less to even open up about. But what amazed me the most throughout your process, was the posture of your heart. Your faith and belief in God made the difference, and proved that you shall reap what you’ve sowed. Even on your darkest days, you’ve rained in positivity, and a bright vision, and I’m so happy to know that you are coming out on top of this. You are a living breathing testimony, and God is not through with you!! To see you so humble and calm when the ship was rocking blessed my heart and inspired me, and allowed me to realize that your peace makes the difference in the midst of your trial. I love you beyond words, and I’m so glad that you’ve taken the time, and blessed us with your testimony because you are an overcomer and a conqueror by the blood of Jesus. Continue to inspire those around you because this is the greatest fulfilling testimony I’ve heard all year in spite of what’s going on in the world!!I love you Sis 🙏🏿❤️.
